Dans l’abysse de l’émulsion

la renaissance du cinéma expérimental en France

(et par d’autres chemins en Italie)

Par Stefano Masi in le catalogue du « 2nd Independent Film Show ».

In The abysse of emulsion

The renaissance of experimental film in France

(and other paths trodden in Italy)

(…) As far as regards the lastest generation of film makers, those under thirty, the programme presents two : Yves-Marie Mahé, who works by manipulating found footage with particular attention to the rhytmic, temporal and musical elements of the film, and Johanna Vaude, who skilfully mixes photosensitive emulsion, video and paint on film create her « rushes from the heart ». a typical example of her approach is « L’œil sauvage », in which paint has the job of inserting visionary elements into the image, already transfigured by the modification of the running speed of the film. The savage eye in question is, in the filmaker’s poetic vision, that of the cat, a hypnotic eye which fixes us in the first part of the film and pulls us into the experience of another vision, magical and sensual, « feline ». yet this savage eye is of course also that of the film maker, and leads us into exploring her visual world, built around a different form of vision, inside a universe which is no longer ours. Another body, another planet, different physical laws upon which a visual experience « other » to our can be constructed.

(…) As well as this, some of the French film makers included in this programme (Et Johanna Vaude, for example) do not ignore video technologies, sometimes used with cinema’s photo-chemistry, sometimes autonomously.
